Youths see bright future in farming; old hands recall some dimmer days
Des Moines Register- 8/27/2008 7:00:00 AM
1 2 Boone, Ia. - The Farm Progress Show that began Tuesday east of Boone united the occasionally unnerving present and future of agriculture with its somber past. On the grounds of the show Tuesday walked three Jasper County teenagers, Joey Lammey, 15; Brian Clymer, 16; and Joseph Brook, 15, who took a day off from Newton High School to look over the agricultural exposition. All are part of farm families and intend to become farmers, and all are invigorated by the record prices for corn and soybeans and the new market outlets presented by biofuels. "This is a great time for agriculture," Lammey said. "Corn and soybean prices have never been higher. I definitely want to become a farmer." Lammey's mates all agreed and said they intended to study agriculture after high school. The teens were part of a large contingent of younger people at the Farm Progress Show, and ambitions to farm were evident everywhere. Andy Ledges and Cody Klahn, who are both 28 and work as hired help on farms near Durant, said they hope someday to own their own farms. "Our crops are looking good right now," Ledges said. "We certainly had enough rain in the spring, and the floods didn't do much damage." But the younger folks could have heard a cautionary tale from Bill Heintz, 90, of Ames, who is old enough to remember corn that sold for 25 cents per bushel in 1933 during the Great Depression. Hogs sold for 2cents per pound that dreary year, Heintz said. "We didn't have a thing then," he said.
